 Last Meeting wrap up

Thanks to Ian A who took a few notes from the last meeting prior to Blackburn High School interviews

  • Wayne stood in as both chairman and Sergeant and started the meeting at 6.40pm.

  • Ian A advised of his attendance at Rotary Club of Box Hill Central  that morning.
  • Phil Maxwell told of his and Wayne’s truck trip to Bega last week to pick up and deliver an  x-ray cassette machine to DIK Footscray – ready for its journey to Timor-Leste.
  • Phil also explained the reason the Board has adopted $300 annual subs for next year. An increase of $20. Accounts will soon be in the mail.
  • Neil Ibbott advised of 2 interviews of NYSF applicants. Both have been recommended to the District interview level.
  • Ben confirmed the arrangements for the Blackburn High interviews.
  • Major Wendy is seeking sponsors for the annual MS walk around Albert Park Lake.  She’s very chuffed that this year is the first that she will do the walk without aid.   Those absent have next week to participate as a sponsor.
  • President Bruce advised that AG Paul Mee is intending to visit us with his wife (Adele) next week. It will be Paul’s last as our AG after 2 years in the role.

Another item is an addition to the Walter & Eliza Hall visit in July.

Bob D, Maria and Ian did a ‘reccy’ to check out food options.

Bob suggested Naughton’s Parkville Hotel. 43 Royal Pde Parkville. (a block or so from our visit)

The rationale being we can park, do our visit and walk to dinner , hopefully leaving cars in the same spot.

The food was good and prices reasonable. It is a fairly busy venue so we will need to book.

A list will be passed around soon to determine interest.

A report on the Blackburn High School visit to be supplied by Ben S at a later time.

ROMAC - Bradley Bola visit

This is the content of an email Harvey sent members recently.  If anyone can assist please let Harvey know ASAP.

BRADLEY BOLA VISIT AND MEDICAL PROGRAM.
29/5/16 – MID AUGUST 16
SPONSORED BY:   ROMAC   (ROTARY OCEANIA MEDICAL AID FOR CHILDREN)
ASSISTED BY:  ROTARY CLUB OF NUNAWADING

Bradley’s Background
Bradley is from PNG and born 17 December 1996 with Crouzon’s Syndrome. The major problem with this condition is that some of the bones of the skull and face fuse and therefore do not grown normally during foetal development.  This will be Bradley’s fourth visit to Australia for surgery courtesy of ROMAC .Bradley is now 17 years old and visited Australia in 1998, 2007, 2014 and hopefully the visit, planned for June /July 2016 will complete his total recovery. What a great job ROMAC do for children like Bradley.

The Program
I have been in contact with Graeme Chester and Norm Casey from ROMAC with respect to the above program and the Clubs role to support Bradley’s visit. Full details of the program will not be firm until Bradley completes his medical appointments in June. He is planned to undergo two operations during this visit. He will have some cranium and facial surgery and then have an eye operation to straighten his eye. Both these involve major specialist surgery.

Bradley’s known program, is as follows:

Arrives Melbourne                        Sunday 29 May at 1625       Met by ROMAC and host family
Medical appointment                    Monday 30 May                   CT Scan plus Eye Specialist (Dr Lionel
Medical appointment                    Tuesday 31 May                  Cranio Facial Specialist ( Professor Andrew Heggie)
Facial Surgery                             Saturday 4 June                   Facial Surgery- Epworth Hospital
Eye Specialist appointment           Friday 17 June                     Appointment with Eye Specialist
Eye Hospital                                Sunday 17 July                    Planned Eye Surgery

Bradley will undergo recuperation periods after both the facial and eye surgery and could be in Australia near on 3 months.
Rotary Nunawading plans are to assist with possible transport to appointments, if required and assist with an entertainment program when Bradley is well enough to participate. Bradley is apparently a mad Melbourne Storm supporter and was made No 1 PNG supporter by the Club at his last visit.  Another visit sounds essential.

Broadly, our program is to have Bradley and his host family to a Wednesday meeting as Club guests and to assist with some entertainment program and outings when Bradley is fit enough. We will provide some respite to the host family and ROMAC, for the 3 months Bradley could be in Australia. I will be reviewing our Club program and the major Rotary events for June and planning a program to suit in June and July.
If any members are interested in being directly involved, your help will be greatly appreciated.  I encourage the Club members to get behind this International program. I am sure we can help to make Bradley’s visit both successful and rewarding.

Visit to Walter & Eliza Hall Institute - July 2016

Club visit to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute

The visit has been arranged for 27 July commencing at 6pm and lasting about 60-70 minutes after which we will adjourn to a restaurant for dinner.

The Institute has advised as follows:-

“Please let me know if there is a particular area of research that you would like to hear about during the tour. The areas of research at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute include cancer, including breast, lung, ovarian, prostate, colon and blood cancers; immune disorders such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and celiac disease; and infectious diseases such as malaria, hepatitis B and HIV. As part of the tour you can meet with a scientist that researches in your area of interest, hear about their research and tour through their laboratory. The tours usually run for approximately one hour, and also include an overview of the history and other research areas at the institute.”

The institute is located at 1G Royal Parade, Parkville (behind the Royal Melbourne Private Hospital). There is limited car parking on their forecourt, and more parking available in the Royal Melbourne Hospital car park beside the institute.

Anyone going away, been away - send photos

Our members do like a bit of travel - just don't put a pic of your boarding pass on social media!!!!

"Instagram was basically invented for the humble brag. Oh this old outfit?

Why yes I did bake this cake from scratch. And, of course, there's the famous passport and boarding pass tease to an upcoming whirlwind adventure (even Jillian Harris can't resist).

But this seemingly innocent act of sharing a pic of your pass on social media could have serious repercussions.

According to KrebsonSecurity, websites exist that can read the barcode on your boarding pass and then hack your personal information, like your phone number, frequent flyer number, and info about all future flights you book through the same number.

That means they can then change your seat on your flight, cancel future flights, and even reset your account PIN entirely.

Yikes.

So the next time you're jetting off to somewhere fabulous, just mention your destination in the caption.

We're sure your followers will believe you - even without photo proof."

bits and pieces
  • Please save the motel soaps or similar size for the 'Days for Girls' program which is a program for sending sanitation products in a wash bag for teenage girls overseas. Give them to Judith.
  • Save used stamps with a good deal of the envelope! They pay by weight! - proceeds go to ROMAC

DISTRICT STAMP FUND

Your DSF is under huge pressure to continue raising valuable funds from Philatelic Garbology.

Why not visit your City Council/Hospital/ School or big business and request their envelopes?

$100k is our aim and with $94,000.00 already achieved we haven't far to go.

Please try -it WON'T COST YOU ONE CENT but WILL DO A LOT FOR THOSE LESS FORTUNATE.

  • Don't forget to save your foreign coins and notes - there is a jar to put them in at the weekly meetings
