Rotary clubs have many things that we do well, all of which are valuable components helping to hold a club together and give it cohesion - which in turn enables us to provide service to the community.
The Rotary Club of Nunawading is one of the largest clubs in our district, and apart from service, fellowship is one of the things that we "do" best.
On Sunday we had 44 Rotarians and friends of Rotary participating in a Car Trial through the Dandenongs and associated environs, followed by lunch at Killara Winery in Seville. The day was an outstanding success, and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone - from Charter Member Bob Hoskins and his wife Bev, to 2 of our newest members Bob and Rick, their partners, and Rick's 5 year old daughter Lara.
Where else would such a disparate group in age, background, occupation and interests come together so seamlessly, to enjoy a challenge, good food, gorgeous views, and great company?
Only in Rotary I suspect - one of the reasons I love this club!
Most regrettably we have had to re-schedule our Trivia Night, planned for May 18.
We have sailed into a perfect storm of external competing events - the federal election called for the same day (most inconsiderate Mr Prime Minister!), Essendon playing that night (the Essendon die-hards will be cheering their team on in person), and many other local Rotary events in the surrounding days and weeks. We also will have a number of members travelling interstate and overseas, so we will plan to hold this event in aid of EndTrachoma2020 in October instead.
Apologies to those who had made arrangements to attend, and worked in advance with planning for the event - but in order to maximise our contribution to this worthy cause, and make the night truly enjoyble for all those attending, rescheduling is our best outcome.
Last week we heard from our own Club member Sue Warmington as she gave us an insight into her experiences providing physiological first aid (PFA) to the people in Townsville following the floods in February this year.
While Sue arrived in Townsville after the worst of the floods had receded, the conditions were still bad. The streets were littered with mouldy furniture, the logistics to get around were stretched, the weather was hot and humid etc.
As a PFA person, Sue worked in an outreach centre with others from Red Cross along with other organisations such as Lifeline and the Department of Community Services (DOCS). Much of the work involved door knocking to see if people had the forms to get the support they were due. Red Cross also provided a link between those needing support and those that could provide it.
The whole work program was very well organised, but with lots of paperwork detailing what they had done.
She found that some of the support people were not professional emergency support people and were unprepared for what they found and Sue had provided support to them too.
Once home in Melbourne, Sue had to be debriefed on the project and later everyone involved received a follow up call to make sure that they were coping following their time in Townsville.
