Last Meeting wrap up

  • welcomed guest speaker Jim Beggs and his wife Tui
  • Sue C advised she and Rob visited Carina and her family while they were overseas.  Carina sends her love and anyone is welcome to visit her and her family.
  • Len advised attendance at RC of Mordialloc sausage sizzle which raised over $2,000.
  • Judith did a make up at the RC of Clayton where they had a RYLA speaker
Guest speaker was Jim Beggs who is the author of "proud to be a wharfie" - a number of us bought the book on the night
  • Jim said he wanted to be a wharfie because they earnt a lot of money (more than the Prime Minister!)
  • He started working on the waterfront in 1951 - the wharves were the lifeblood of the nation
  • There were 20 different unions in 1987 that covered all the people who worked on the wharves.  There were 15 strikes in 8 months. None involved the waterside workers union but they got the blame.
  • At one time there were 8,000 wharfies - now there are 200 and eventually the piers will be fully automated
  • Jim used to carry 90kg bags of wheat and a person was expected to move 24 tonnes of wheat in an 8 hour shift.  To empty a ship in this way took a couple of weeks.  It now takes 13 hours.
  • Asbestos was a big killer of waterside workers
  • Horses used to move the cargo - unscrupulous owners made the horses work double shifts.  The wharfies would paint their hooves to keep track of the shifts horses worked to make sure they were not overworked
Excerpt from Maritime Workers Union website - launch of "proud to be a wharfie"  November 2013

Ex-Waterside Workers’ Federation Victoria President Jim Beggs launched his book - Proud to be a Wharfie – last Wednesday at the Victorian branch Retired Member’s Luncheon.

Image - Retired lunch 19.jpg

To help Beggs with the launch was Barry Jones a former Labor Party president, John Cain a former Victoria Premier, and Frank Vincent one of Australia’s most respected Supreme Court Judges.

An excerpt from Beggs’ speech:

I named the book Proud to be a Wharfie because I am. And because no other union in this country ever received more adverse publicity than our union has. I wrote the book to tell the real story about the wharfies here in the port of Melbourne over the past 62 years of my involvement and not what the media has written about us over that time.

I tell about the Bull system under the casual days, which was pitting the weak against the strong with its corrupt open pick-up system and the difficult and dangerous cargoes we worked. The unsocial hours of work, the barbed wire fence that ran through the compound that separated the scabs who took our union member’s jobs in the big 1928 strike.

The horses that pulled the cargo from under the hook, though to mechanisation, containerisation and permanency.

Wharfies are now on the endangered species list, we have gone from 2o different unions in the port to one. There were some 80,000 workers in the whole of the port in our day. Today there are just over 3000 discharging hundreds of thousands more tons of cargo than we ever did.

But more than that I wanted to write about our humour, our generosity, the many characters and their quirky nicknames, our loyalty to our union and above all our mateship.

In writing the book, I particularly had in mind the new generation of Labor and trade unionists. To say to them, that, we are a force for good in the world and I hope it will encourage them to look more seriously at their role to take our movement forward. If they want to fine the way ahead today, they will need to know where they have come from and get back to their roots, which grew out of inspired men of character, integrity and faith. They need to know that trade unions are agents for change. Wisely directed, this new generation will rise to guise men and women to a new sense of human values and the work and wealth of the world available to all and for the exploitation of none.

ROMAC - Bradley Bola visit update

BRADLEY BOLA VISIT AND MEDICAL PROGRAM.
29/5/16 – MID AUGUST 16
SPONSORED BY:   ROMAC   (ROTARY OCEANIA MEDICAL AID FOR CHILDREN)
ASSISTED BY:  ROTARY CLUB OF NUNAWADING

Latest Update on Bradley

After some discussion with Norm Casey on Friday 19 August 2016:

He advised Bradley has suffer a small set back after his nose and eye operations.

Bradley is experiencing some headaches which he also encountered after his visit in 2014.
It has lengthened his stay and this requires a visa extension and further involvement from ROMAC.

Bradley will see a Neurosurgeon next Tuesday for a further assessment and determination.

I asked Norm to wish Bradley the very best from all the members at Rotary Nunawading and he promised to keep us posted on Bradley's progress.

DISTRICT STAMP FUND

Why not visit your City Council/Hospital/ School or big business and request their envelopes?

$100k is our aim and with $94,000.00 already achieved we haven't far to go.

UNICEF NEEDS YOUR FOREIGN COINS

More and more of us are heading overseas and we always seem to return with useless foreign coins!

Ron Brooks, RC of Forest Hill, coordinates this successful D9810 project.   Ron will coordinate at District level but needs help from all clubs. In the last 18 months 120kgs of coins and notes sent to UNICEF were valued by them at $4,700.64

Eammon Bryant, UNICEF Partnerships Manager emailed “We see Rotary and UNICEF as a perfect match.    Our history working with, and converting foreign coin to help children in need matched with your unparalleled reach across Australian communities, we think, makes it a dream fit”.   UNICEF works in over 190 countries to support children’s health needs, clean water and sanitation, quality basic education, and protection from violence, exploitation, and HIV.

So, far more than 15 clubs in the district have joined enthusiastically into this initiative.   We are 12.1kgs into the next collection.
  =
• $2 will provide a severely malnourished child enough therapeutic super food for one day
•  $6 will provide 20 doses of potentially life-saving measles vaccine

UNICEF will also take old European coins that are no longer in circulation.

Please leave your foreign coins and notes in the jar on the desk

Joke of the Week

A frog hops into a fortune teller’s tent and asks for a reading. The fortune teller agrees, then turns over the cards and says, “Very soon, a lovely young girl will become fascinated by you, and everything about you.”

“Wow,” replied the frog. “That’s great! Will we meet near the pond?”

“No,” said the fortune teller. “Next week, in her biology class.”
