Visit to Walter & Eliza Hall Institute - July 2016

Club visit to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute

The visit has been arranged for 28 July commencing at 6pm and lasting about 60-70 minutes after which we will adjourn to a restaurant for dinner.

The Institute has advised as follows:-

“Please let me know if there is a particular area of research that you would like to hear about during the tour. The areas of research at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute include cancer, including breast, lung, ovarian, prostate, colon and blood cancers; immune disorders such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and celiac disease; and infectious diseases such as malaria, hepatitis B and HIV. As part of the tour you can meet with a scientist that researches in your area of interest, hear about their research and tour through their laboratory. The tours usually run for approximately one hour, and also include an overview of the history and other research areas at the institute.”

The institute is located at 1G Royal Parade, Parkville (behind the Royal Melbourne Private Hospital). There is limited car parking on their forecourt, and more parking available in the Royal Melbourne Hospital car park beside the institute.

In April I will seem the members views on what areas they have an interest in being covered during the visit.

Below are some photos from Graeme and Marion M in Argentina

They really know how to do wine tours here. Highlight was a gourmet 6 course lunch with matching wines. All up four wineries over 8 hours and unbelievably was not able to finish all the tasting samples at the fourth winery. The samples were extremely generous in size. The photo above was from the first winery at 9.30am where the showed us how different food flavours matched the various wines. I should have waited for the wines to be poured before taking the photo.

Vineyards with the Andes as a backdrop.

Aconcagua is the highest mountain outside the Himalayas. We were at 10,000 feet for this viewing.

This shop in Mendoza caters for all sizes.

Quote of the Week

Sometimes, looking at the many books I have at home, I feel I shall die before I come to the end of them, yet I cannot resist the temptation of buying new books. Whenever I walk into a bookstore and find a book on one of my hobbies... I say to myself, "What a pity I can't buy that book, for I already have a copy at home." ~Jorge Luis Borges (1899–1986), "The Riddle of Poetry," This Craft of Verse, edited by Călin-Andrei Mihăilescu, 2000
