WHAT IS A ROTARY PEACE FELLOW?

Established in 2002, each year, Rotary selects individuals from around the world to receive fully funded academic fellowships at one of the peace centres.

These fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and all internship/field study expenses. Two types of peace fellowships are available. We offer Master’s degree fellowships at premier universities in fields related to peace and conflict resolution and prevention. Programs last 15–24 months and require a practical internship of 2–3 months during the academic break.

Each year we award up to 50 master’s fellowships from these institutions:
  • Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, US
  • International Christian University, Japan
  • University of Bradford, UK
  • University of Queensland, Australia
  • Uppsala University, Sweden

President Phil's Christmas Message

Our Christmas Traditions

Most of our Australian Christmas rituals are derived from traditions first introduced to Great Britain by Prince Albert following his wedding to Queen Victoria in 1840. Albert brought the tradition of a Christmas tree from Germany.

In 1978 I spent two months in Springfield Massachusetts running a pilot plant developing a new plastics production process. In my spare time, I drove to Boston, Cape Cod, spent New Years Eve in New York and had a white Christmas in Springfield. I woke up to snow falling and the sounds of snowploughs clearing the roads around the hotel. I was invited to the Research facility Manager’s house for Christmas lunch and enjoyed a day with his family. The snow made it a day to remember. The weather then changed to freezing rain making driving a life-threatening experience that brought home the reality of winter in New England.

In Australia we still listen to songs of “Sleigh Bells in the Snow” and enjoy Bing singing about a “White Christmas” even though Christmas Day for us could be 40°C and spent by the pool or beach.

Sue and I believe that “Nothing Exceeds like Excess” at Christmas. We have boxes of decorations that have been accumulated during our years together. Some are from family no longer with us while other decorations were purchased on overseas trips to Europe or North America. As we place them on the tree it brings back memories of these very special people and places and makes them part of our celebration.

We have an “Angel on the Christmas Tree” list that keeps a record of who finished off the tree each year. This list is also a record of growing children, pets that helped place the angel, and the addition of our grandson to the family. This is one of those traditions that Sue, Felicity, Caroline, Dave, Arnie and I enjoy that would never rank up there with Prince Albert’s contribution but is very special to us.

Whatever your traditions might be at Christmas we wish you the very best of wishes and hope that you enjoy the holiday period.

Phil Maxwell
Guest Speaker - Kerrimuir Schooldays
Our own Judith Eadon was recently asked to speak at the Box Hill Historical Society and she was invited to share her presentation with us.

Judith was one of the first pupils at Kerrimuir Primary School when it opened in 1959. At the time, Box Hill North was developing from orchards into an outer suburb of Melbourne and children were mainly from an English-speaking background and from single-income families. In February 1959, the school already had 300 children but only 6 classrooms!

She grew up on the corner of Springfield Road and Kerrimuir Street Box Hill North in the ’50s to the echo of floor boards being nailed together, due to the post war housing boom. The eldest of four children, she  attended Blackburn North Primary School for a year until Kerrimuir Primary School was built. Her parents, Peg and Frank, were pillars of the school community, being office bearers on the School Committee and Mothers’ Club for many years. Her Mum became the school secretary at Kerrimuir and worked until the early ’90s.

Judith reminded us about some of the experiences that children of our generation shared:
  • Government-suppled milk in Tetra Paks that was sometimes left out in the sun
  • School banking sponsored by the State Bank of Victoria (now defunct)
  • Monday morning Assembly
  • The standardised books for each year level
  • The segregated play areas and the stereotypical roles for boy and girls
We are very fortunate to have such a knowledgeable local historian as a member of our Club.

Greetings from PBF Australia
We hope that 2017, has been treating you and your Cub very kindly and kept you all in good health and enthusiasm with your busy community service lifestyle.

With the year rapidly coming to a festive season close you are in our thoughts and I feel the need to:
  1. Express our sincere appreciation of your support of our efforts to reduce the incidence and crippling human and financial impact of spinal cord injury, through your Club’s partnership with us.
  2. Thank you for your loyalty and friendship since your organisation joined PBF in 2001. Without help from organisations such as yours we can’t continue to employee Australians with spinal cord injury to deliver our injury prevention programs or fund unmet needs created by this very costly disability.
Please pass on to all Club members  my personal best wishes and PBF’s wishes for a very blessed, family enjoyable, and safe Christmas/New Year break and an exciting and rewarding 2018.

Very best wishes.
