  • Welcomed Bruce A on crutches!
  • Special mention to Dick T who clocks up 48 years in Rotary on 10/04
  • Russell volunteered to replace Len as chair for next week (13/04)
  • Roger needs to know roughly how many people will attend on 27/04 as it is a combined meeting with RC of Forest Hill
  • Treasurer Phil advised the clubs first electronic transfer has been made - no more cheques!!
  • Charges for security at Parliament House will be shared by the clubs - this is for MUNA on the weekend 30/04 and 01/05
  • Judith advised she went for District Governor for 2018/2019 but was not successful - she thanked those who supported her.
Our speaker was Dr Philip Bachelor - CEO of Box Hill Cemetery.

Box Hill is a 30 acre B type cemetery that has been operating for 140 years. There are 200 funerals and 40,000 visits from mourners annually.  The cemetery must maintain records and access to more than 30,000 graves.

There are many famous Australians buried at Box Hill.  They include Sir William Angliss, C.J. Dennis, Sir Ian Clunies Ross, Sidney Myer and Dr Cyril Callister (he invented vegemite)

Most of the historical information Philip gave us can be found in the Box Hill Cemetery website below:

Philip told us that originally the last grave site was sold in 2005 and the Cemetery Trust was facing impending insolvency as they had no funding.  Cemeteries are not for profit entities and use Crown land.  In 2011 and cemetery manager was engaged.  1,200 unused grave sites were identified and in 2013 work  commenced on reclaiming these sites.

Box Hill was the first cemetery to identify the need to have sustainability costs over the short and long term.  They also established set fees.  They are set at upwards of $14,500 per plot.  This money is held in trust to be used for the ongoing running and maintenance costs for the cemetery.

The board was rejuvenated and now has a range of members who come from governance, finance and law backgrounds - there are a couple of board members in their 30's.

Philip had compiled a lot of interesting statistical information over the years.  He did this by asking people to complete questionnaires when they visited cemeteries.
  • In 2015, 153,000 people died in Australia. About 3.8 million people lost a family member
  • There were 38 million visitors to 2,300 cemeteries across the country.
  • 66% of people are cremated, 32% are buried and 2% are entombed
  • Relationship of the person visiting to deceased person:  38% visiting a parent, 30% visiting a spouse, 11% visiting a child, 6% visiting a Grandparent, 6% visiting a sibling, 7% visiting friends or other relations
  • people who follow catholic or orthodox religions are more likely to visit a cemetery and are more likely to visit once a week. They are also more likely to be buried
  • Most visits take place in the first year after death
  • females are more likely to visit than males
  • visitors are likely to be 60 or more years old
  • the most time spent on average is at a child grave (45 minutes per visit).  A visit to parent/spouse grave is likely to be 20 to 30 minutes.

What happened at Giant Monopoly!!

Giant Monopoly fundraiser on Friday 8th April at Box Hill Town Hall

Judith, Sue W, Russell and Gabby along with 3 friends of Russell and Sue attended the Giant Monopoly fundraiser on Friday night.

Firstly congratulations to Whitehorse Rotaract who ran a really good and fun event.   All money raised will go to Art Building Childrens Dreams (ABCD) which is an international project of the RC of Templestowe - to date the project has raised around $400,000 - Rotaract have run four Giant Monopoly nights so far to contribute to this very fine total.

There were 11 teams - we were the "cannon" team.

As the photos below show - there is a giant size monopoly board with giant pieces and a couple of big blow up dice.  The aim of course is to collect as many properties as you can so you collect lots of rent.  There were a number of challenges to sort out which team got the rights to buy a property if more than one team landed on on the  same square. One of these included wrapping a team mate in toilet paper!

All up there were 12 rounds - of the 12 rounds we managed to go to jail 3 times and we never got to pass "Go" to collect an extra $200 because we kept going to jail!!!.  But we did not let this deter us - once in jail we discovered collectively we had a multitude of talents that allowed us to be released from jail most expediently!  To get out of jail we had to complete challenges - these included doing the "nutbush" , yodeling, bouncing a ping pong ball on bat for 30 seconds, balancing a ping pong ball on a bat etc.

The 3rd and final time we went to jail, the mayor and the jailer felt we were so noisy and badly behaved they made us do 3 challenges before letting us go!!

Despite our 3 incarcerations we still managed to buy 4 railway stations and were able to collect lots of rent when we weren't in jail!.  We came a very respectable 3rd.  1st place went to the team from RC of Mont Albert and Surrey Hills.  2nd place not sure.

Highly recommended if you want to have a lot of fun and raise money for a worthwhile cause.

And finally a cartoon sent through especially because District Governor David was there on the night but didn't win!

Thanks to Sue W for photos

Lunch for Ian & Juliet Riseley 19/06/2016

Visit to Walter & Eliza Hall Institute - July 2016

Club visit to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute

The visit has been arranged for 27 July commencing at 6pm and lasting about 60-70 minutes after which we will adjourn to a restaurant for dinner.

The Institute has advised as follows:-

“Please let me know if there is a particular area of research that you would like to hear about during the tour. The areas of research at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute include cancer, including breast, lung, ovarian, prostate, colon and blood cancers; immune disorders such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and celiac disease; and infectious diseases such as malaria, hepatitis B and HIV. As part of the tour you can meet with a scientist that researches in your area of interest, hear about their research and tour through their laboratory. The tours usually run for approximately one hour, and also include an overview of the history and other research areas at the institute.”

The institute is located at 1G Royal Parade, Parkville (behind the Royal Melbourne Private Hospital). There is limited car parking on their forecourt, and more parking available in the Royal Melbourne Hospital car park beside the institute.

In April I will seek the members views on what areas they have an interest in being covered during the visit.

Quote of the Week

Although they can be very healthy I believe the current focus on gluten-free lifestyles is a little misplaced. I see an awful lot of people who would benefit much more from a glutton-free lifestyle.
