Yesterday our club hosted an information stall at the annual Whitehorse Spring Festival, at the Council buildings in Nunawading.

We were ably assisted by 4 other Rotary clubs and the Whitehorse Rotaract Club, in our mission to hand out 600 carry bags full of Rotary promotional goodies, augmented by info on the Eastern Emergency Relief Network, BeyondBlue, Australian Rotary Health, Rotarians Against Malaria, our own Medical Imaging projects, and various other club projects from across the cluster.

22 Rotarians and Rotaractors gave up their time - many across multiple shifts - to spread the Rotary word, and engage with people from our local community seeking information on all the wonderful things that Rotary does both locally and overseas.

The fact that our reusable showbags were all given out in the first couple of hours is testament to the numbers attending the festival - and what a wonderful sight it was to see all those brightly colored Australian Rotary Health showbags being carried around the festival. We consciously used recyclable bags, which are very useful to take to the supermarket, so our promotion will continue to have legs for many months to come.

Kind Regards,

Janette

Scams using RI office-holders' details
Below is an email from RI regarding recent scams using RI office-holders' details. Please read and beware when opening emails that purport to be from RI, and which ask for personal details or money

Dear Rotarian,

Rotary recently learned that scammers have created multiple communication and social media accounts that impersonate RI President Barry Rassin, RI President-elect Mark Maloney, General Secretary John Hewko and perhaps other Rotary leaders. The communication accounts include or involve email, WhatsApp and Viber.  The social media accounts have been on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.

These are not authentic Rotary communications. They are phishing and spoofing attempts to obtain money and personal information.  The perpetrators may attempt to convince Rotary members to send funds to support alleged Rotary causes.

Rotary monitors for and responds to these attempts as part of an ongoing effort to keep member, program participant, and staff data safe. We also work with LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp to remove imposter accounts.

Neither President Rassin’s, President-elect Maloney’s, nor General Secretary Hewko’s authentic accounts have been compromised.

Rotary members should continue to exercise caution:
  • Disregard any suspicious message that offers money, requests money, or asks for your personal information.
  • Avoid opening attachments or following links in suspicious messages.
  • Pay close attention to the details of the email address and signature block to verify the sender.
If you receive what you believe to be a suspicious message from the president, general secretary, or another Rotary leader, please forward it to fraudreport@rotary.org and then delete it immediately.

Regards,
Rick Kick
Chief Information Officer, RI
Bunnings Sausage Sizzle 18 October 2018
Our Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings last Thursday generated a Net result of $454. Unfortunately we had a very wet start to the day, so a huge thank you to Dick and Max who helped me slosh around in the puddles and in the rain to get everything unpacked and set up.

Special thanks to Sue W for sorting out the roster, and to everyone else who helped out across the day - especially our honorary Rotarians Viv Ibbott and Bev Hoskins.

Janette

Last Week's meeitng
Rob & Aliya Porter gave an interesting and informative talk on the work they undertook for the restoration of a heritage listed home. Rob highlighted the joys of tracing the history of the building and more importantly its owners. While Aliya gave us some insight into the actual work required to restore such a building to its former glory while marking it liveable in a 21st century world

There is no charge for the Seminar. Complimentary tea/coffee will be available and there also is a cash bar service.
Multi District Conference and Peace Forum
The 2019 Victorian Multi-District Conference was officially launched last Saturday. It will be a source of inspiration and an amazing gathering of the family of Rotary on show to the Melbourne public.

Note that there are two weeks remaining to take advantage of the early bird prize offer. The odds are pretty good, so register soon to secure your place for the various events, including the Gala Dinner, themed "A Touch of Red." http://www.rotaryconference.org.au/

Note that partners are welcome to attend the Gala dinner, only, if accompanying a fully registered attendee. As there are only around 800 dinner places remaining, this will be based on first in, best dressed.

The theme for this October’s National Safe Work Month is “A moment is all it takes.”

While a safety incident can happen in a moment and in any workplace, a moment’s forethought can prevent harm.

Safe Work Australia Chair, Diane Smith-Gander, urges employers and workers to take a safety moment this October.

This could be as simple as spending five minutes every morning talking with your team about the hazards and risks in your workplace, and how to prevent harm.

The national campaign encourages participants to share their safety moment using #mysafetymoment.

During October PBF will be working with our corporate partners to share the important Safe Work message.

If you want more information on supporting PFB contact Ian Armstrong or visit the PBF website.
