WHAT CAN YOUR $1,000 DONATION TO THE ROTARY FOUNDATION DO?

Your $1,000.00 donation to The Rotary Foundation can help provide all materials necessary for the construction of a deep bore well in India which supplies clean drinking water to more than 300 people, materials to treat and prevent parasites and anaemia in need children in Uruguaiana, R.S., Brazil, or purchase a tree nursery in Jamaica that will annually produce 5,000 tree seedlings and increase family income for 700 farmers, or provide artificial limbs to 25 disabled persons in Calcutta, India, or buy kitchen equipment for an orphanage in Peru, or provide a cow and animal husbandry training to a widow in Uganda where civil war shattered the economy and children die because of a lack of protein and calcium in their diets, or buy polio vaccine for 2,000 babies in Nigeria, or fund enough textbooks to educate 2,000 children in a school in Papua New Guinea, or provide 20 $50.00 micro-loans enabling women in Nicaragua to start a craft business to support their families.

CAN YOU COMMIT TODAY TO DONATING $1,000 PER YEAR TO THE ROTARY FOUNDATION & START MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN PEOPLE’S LIVES. WILL YOU?

ClubRunner
President Phil's Message

Nunawading backs a winner

The decision by the Rotary Club of Nunawading to use ClubRunner as the club database has proved to be a very sound decision. Rotary District 9810 after an exhaustive survey of available products has decided to use ClubRunner for the District as well.

This means that the club information will be seamlessly available to the District. The District directory will be available and directly readable from the CR App on your smartphone. This change should mean that the District Directory is up to date rather than being out of date as soon as it is published. The CR App already shows the items below:
The Club listing with meeting dates and times is functional as is the District executives file. Some District stories are there but the District events is a work in progress.

If you do not have the ClubRunner App on your phone then it can be downloaded from the App Store. If you need help then ask John Lynch, Graeme Moorfoot or me.

I find that the App is better than saving individual personal details to my phone. As long as CR is updated by users if they move or change phones then it will always be up to date with no effort on your part.
Give it a go!

PE Janette, PN Gabby and I spent a day last week talking about our ideas for the three years ahead. The resulting plan was discussed at the Board Meeting last Wednesday night. With minor amendments, I will sent it around to all members this week.

It is clear to me and future Presidents that the Club must increase the use of internet-based systems to efficiently run the club. Some club roles will need to be adapted to align with these changes. For instance, the Secretary’s role is no longer typing, sending letters and receiving postal mail. The proposal is that this role should now include the scanning and uploading of attendance records for BBQs and the Whitehorse Farmers Market. We already have a Documents file on the CR site that will be used to store these items. Our insurance policy requires us to keep copies of attendances forever and the CR server with its backup is a safer place than Bob’s garage (No offence meant Bob)
I would like to thank the Club members and Board that made the decision to move to ClubRunner many years ago. You had a lot of foresight and your decision has positioned us well for the future.

Last Week's Meeting - May 09
Wendy Oliver has requested 8 volunteers to assist with roadside collection for the Red Shield Appeal on Saturday 26 May between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Please email Wendy or talk to her about your availability.

Russell reported that the Club members had sold 50 raffle books, contributing $ 1000 towards our Fundraising goal.

Our Guest Speaker was Mary George from Pavilions which is a Lifestyle Retirement Village on the site of the Seventh Day Adventist Campground at Blackburn Lake.

Mary told us that in 2017 there were 178,000 people living in retirement communities and this is projected to increase to 325,000 by 2025. Retirees are looking to downsize and have low maintenance and freedom with the secure knowledge that they can go away for a few months and not worry about their property. This new development will have communal facilities for everyone to enjoy and access to aged care if required.
Call Out for Help
Members may be aware that Beverley and I will be moving from our family home of the last 48 years and into a smaller unit. During that time we have been storing a considerable amount of Club history. Last weekend, my family sorted through most of the items that have accumulated over the last 48 years and did a big clean out. I heavily culled the Rotary Club gear, only retaining the items that we used for the 50th anniversary function.
I will now need someone to take over the storage of the following:
  • 1 x carton 60cm x 40cm x 30cm high
  • 1 x carton 40cm x 30cm x 30cm high
  • 3 x banners (rolled up)
  • 2 x Rocars

If you can help out with this, please let me know on 9878-2220.
Foreign Coins Collection
Dear President Phil & Judith,

I was handed 1.4 kg of foreign coins and notes last night which I was told came from your Club. Thank you and please thank your Club for this collection for UNICEF. On average, this would be worth over $40. Coins and notes that would otherwise be worthless are converted into help for underprivileged children. This brings the total to 56.5 kg of coins and a large wad of notes. When it gets to 60 kg, I can send them off.

So far this District project has raised $ 9,124 from the 300 kg of coins and notes forwarded to UNICEF and has encouraged Mary Waite (Corporate Partnerships Manager at UNICEF Australia) to join Rotary where she is now her Club’s Youth Chairman and she is going to their conference this year. You never know where these projects lead as she now plans to get a similar collection going in her District.

Regards and thank you from the underprivileged children of the world,

Ron Brooks

District 9810 MUNA Report
For the 20th time since the first MUNA event held in 1999, we were fortunate to be able to hold MUNA in the magnificent Legislative Assembly Chamber of the Victorian Parliament House. We should never underestimate the impact on the students of this elegant historical building, the atmosphere of the place, and the fact that the students are actually sitting and working in the seats normally occupied by our lawmakers.

This year 38 teams participated representing 38 countries in five blocs that are grouped according to the geopolitical and economic development stages of the countries. There were a number of complex issues and resolutions debated over the two days. There were very few interruptions to debate which resulted in eight resolutions being debated. Costuming was of a high standard with many of the teams making an effort to represent the national dress of their allocated country. Rotaractors in their red shirts working as diplomatic couriers added a lot of colour and movement to the event. Catering satisfied the needs of all of the youngsters, and the visitors were able to share in the morning and afternoon tea delicacies.

The team from Box Hill High School, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Forest Hill and representing Jordan was judged as the best performing team of the weekend. They will be attending the National MUNA event held in Canberra in August. The team from Presbyterians Ladies’ College representing North Korea and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Box Hill were the runners up. This year the students agreed with the judges and voted for the Jordan delegates as the best contributing team to the debate. The prize for best costumes went to the delegates from North Korea, from Presbyterian Ladies’ College. The District Governor’s encouragement prize went to the students from St Bede’s College sponsored by the Rotary Club of Dingley Village representing Pakistan for effort and participation. The team from Salesian College, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Oakleigh and representing Thailand received the prize for submitting the best student resolution which was debated as the first resolution on Sunday morning.

2018 MUNA received strong support from the majority of the Clubs in the District, with schools also very keen to take part in this event. This program is viewed as part of leadership training for many of the schools. There were queries from schools well after the application closing date wanting to participate in MUNA. Teachers from these schools all stated they would be working with nearby Rotary clubs to ensure they are able to have their teams registered in time for 2019 MUNA.
