Australian Rotary Health is an activity established and supported by Rotary Clubs in Australia. It is their goal to support healthier minds, bodies and communities through research, awareness and education.
Zoe Fitzgibbon, granddaughter of Bev and Bob Hoskins, spoke to us passionately about Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Her two cousins were born with the disease which affects the lungs and digestion system with sticky mucous. Sadly, one cousin passed away last year aged just 30. It is genetic and there is no cure. Zoe, in year 12, is the School Community Awareness Captain at Ruyton Girls School in Kew. Her mother Julie Hoskins accompanied her to the meeting along with her very proud grandparents!
Suzanne Murphy, the chair, then went on to explain that the Rotary Club of Nunawading has an opportunity to take over the Garden Party at Cruden Farm event that has been running for a number of years to raise money for research into Cystic Fibrosis. Therese, who has run the garden party in memory of her daughter, is now living in Perth and finding it difficult to organise has asked Suzanne and our Rotary Club to take over. A very worthwhile project that has committed suppliers and patronage. Cruden Farm formerly owned by Dame Elizabeth Murdoch is an outstanding venue! This would have to be 'an all hands on deck' project.
At the March Board meeting it was approved that the Club donates $ 450 for the purchase of an AQUABOX to be sent to Vanuatu after the recent devastating cyclone. Here is some background on the Aquabox Project.
Aquabox (www.aquabox.com.au) is essentially a lifesaving water tank with water filters and water treatment tablets that can convert up to 2,000 litres of polluted water, making it safe and pleasant to drink. The boxes are also filled with emergency aid to reduce the suffering during the aftermath of a disaster. This local initiative is powered by the members of the Rotary Club of Eltham (District 9790).
120 Aquaboxes have been dispatched for Vanuatu from Melbourne. Clean water is drastically needed in the disaster area and the Aquabox water purification units have the capability to convert over 550,000 litres of dirty water into clean drinking water for the victims of Cyclone PAM. Working with Rotary NZ World Community Service and Red Cross in Vanuatu the Aquaboxes will be distributed to individual families in need as well larger village communities, schools and clinics. The additional aid in the Aquaboxes will also provide some shelter, food utensils and basic tools to help in recovery.
Although communication and transportation is still difficult in Vanuatu we will be continuing to work in partnership with Rotary NZ and Red Cross to meet the needs of the cyclone victims.
