Presentation of Deakin Community award to Hank Gibcus

Last year Hank was nominated by RC Nunawading for a Deakin Community award to recognise his service to the community as part of the Rotary clubs of both Bayswater and Nunawading for 41 years plus his ongoing work with the Aurora School in Blackburn South.

Hank was unable to attend the awards ceremony last year so fellow member and federal MP for Deakin, Michael Sukkar presented the award to Hank at our meeting.  Also present were Hanks wife Maria and their son Paul.

Congratulations Hank!

We also welcomed our Assistant District Governor Paul Mee.

Paul brought greetings from District Governor David.  He commended the club on its significant achievements.  He highlighted "My Rotary" as the future major method of communication.  He mentioned the International Womens Day Breakfast on 9 March at Box Hill Town hall.  This is being run by the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central but ideally it would be good to have a rep from each club on the committee so it is a cluster driven event.

He drew our attention to radio programs Rotary can advertise on (96.5FM and 94.4FM)

He went through our program for the rest of the year as listed in the most recent Bulletin and noted our ongoing engagement in many areas.

Speaker for the evening was Wendy Oliver who spoke about her experience volunteering in Cambodia for 5 weeks in 2015.
  • she went through a British organisation called i 2 i
  • all volunteers are self funded
  • she spent 4 weeks in a newly set up child care centre run by 2 sisters.  She also did a week of touring along the Mekong River, Phenom Penh, saw some temples
  • The child care centre was for kids from the slums and was located in one of the slum areas.  It was set up up to provide care for children whose parents were self employed.
  • If there is no child care the kids go where the parents go or they have to look after younger siblings and this means they will not go to school
  • They learn many skills at day care - Wendy taught English
  • While she was there she contributed to many improvements including purchasing fans, a fridge, a new oven and stove, chairs and stuffed toys.
