Tonights speaker was Gerry Silk from Australian Vietnam Volunteers Resource Group (AVVRG). Gerry helps to train nurses in hospitals in Vietnam.
Gerry has been visiting since 2002. She was awarded the Ho Chi Minh medal for service.
when she first went there they used beach balls as oxygen tanks
over the years they have built a diverse list of lectures and workshops to deliver to nurses. This includes triage, blood gasses, day in the life of an ICU nurse, midwifery, trauma workshops etc
The groups take equipment over and show nursing staff how to use it.
over the years more people have joined the group and include MICA paramedics, Social Workers, Audiologists, NICU nurses and last year the medical director from John Hunter NICU went as well.
Next year there are 52 places on the team and they already have 80 applications
All the team members are self funded.
AVVRG is a national group and each state covers a different area. Queensland send mental health reps, South Australia looks after dental and Victoria looks after Health Education and Nursing.

The Rotary Foundation Cadre of Technical Coordinators
The Rotary Foundation is currently looking to expand its Cadre of volunteer advisers to evaluate Foundation projects.
Representing all Rotary districts and a wide spectrum of professional expertise, the cadre is a diverse group of volunteer Rotarians who monitor and evaluate Foundation grant projects all over the world by conducting paper reviews and traveling to project sites to evaluate technical feasibility and compliance with The Rotary Foundation's missions and objectives.
The cadre is currently recruiting volunteers in the following areas.
Maternal and child health professionals (such as nurses and obstetricians) in Africa and Asia
Water and sanitation professionals (such as civil and mechanical engineers) in Africa and Asia
Spanish-speaking auditors in North and Central America
Rotarians living in Africa, in all areas of focus
Rotarians with expertise in monitoring and evaluation, sustainability, and community needs assessments
If you know of any Rotarians in your district who would make great cadre members, I encourage you to forward them the attached cadre registration instructions.
Lesley is a member of the District End Slavery Committee, and was persuaded
to 'create' a newsletter for their group.
The first issue was linked into the District Highlights.
Their purpose is to inform Rotarians on the subject of modern day slavery.
