Melbourne Cup celebrations

A fun evening was had celebrating all things horsey.

We started off with that most famous of events  "throwing horseshoes over a pole" also known as "coits".  There were some pretty good attempts but the only 2 to get the horseshoe over the pole were Pres. Bruce and Dick T so they won a bag of chocolate gold coins each.

Next was "pin the tail on the ass"  - Sue W kindly offered up her scarf as a blindfold while we had vain attempts at sticking the tail as close as possible to where the tail should be - winner from each table - Len B, Russell W and Sue Maxwell scored themselves a miniature bottle of champas each

The feature event however, was the inaugural Bucatini Cup - Wayne W, Dr Bob D, Phil M and Gabby volunteered only to discover they were to "gallop" around Bucatinis carpark with a stuffed horse strapped to a broom handle as an appendage.  At stake - a solid plastic 4 inch high cup embellished with "gold" resplendent on a black, equally solid marble effect plastic stand.  It was a hotly contested event with first past the post Dr Bob D closely pursued by Wayne W and Phil M.  Gabby fell off her horse and limped in last!.

A few sweeps were held and the results will be in the next Bulletin - winners will be announced at Wednesdays meeting.

Club meets at an historic venue
Whilst staying with friends at Jamestown in the west of New York state, Roger and Roslyn Wilson visited The Robert H Jackson Center, to find the Rotary Club of Jamestown holding their lunchtime meeting at the centre. The club is one of 4 Rotary clubs in Jamestown (population 31,000) and has over 100 members. Roger met a number of Rotarian before their meeting started, but the interesting aspect was the venue.

Robert H Jackson (1892-1954) who came from a humble background, was largely self taught and never ran for political office, grew up in Jamestown and became a prominent lawyer, but did not have a law degree. He completed a law apprenticeship and at the age of 21 passed the New York State Bar exam. On 11/7/1941 he became the 82nd Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court and was destined to become the Chief Justice of the Court until President Harry S Truman appointed him as the US Chief Prosecutor for the proposed Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals, giving him a free reign to design and implement the trials. He forged an agreement between the allied powers called the “London Charter” which became the basis for the International Military Tribunal trials and is still used today to try war criminals from conflicts such as those in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.

The Robert H Jackson Center was established in 2001 to honour and advance the legacy of Robert Jackson, the centre is located in the historic Alsonzo Kent mansion which was built in 1859-60 by Alonzo Kent, a wealthy businessman and president of the former First National Bank of Jamestown. It remained in the Kent family until 1920 when it was sold to the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry who then sold it to the founders of The Robert H Jackson Center, which was when the Rotary Club of Jamestown began to hold their meetings in the building. The club is very proud to be able to meet in this historic location.

Jamestown had its first snow for this winter whilst Roger and Roslyn were visiting, see photo.

  • Please save the motel soaps or similar size for the 'Days for Girls' program which is a program for sending sanitation products in a wash bag for teenage girls overseas. Give them to Judith. Sandra and the RC Monash think our club is wonderful for saving all the soaps!!
  • Save used stamps with a good deal of the envelope! They pay by weight!
  • Foreign coins are being collected in a container at the desk. Ron Brooks RC Forest Hill has collected many kgs!
