Stories
Last weeks meeting

Notes from last weeks meeting:
  • Peter K and Lesley returned from a visit to East Timor.  Peter gave Pres. David banners from RC of Dili and RC of Darwin.  Their meeting went well. There is an election in March/April so more will happen after that.  They escorted 3 exchange students on their way to Brazil from Dili to Darwin.
  • Phil M went to RC of Monash meeting - they also have a project in East Timor - need basic medical equipment to assist delivering babies (such as forceps etc.).  Bentleigh RC has offered funding for the MIM project and Monash may be interested
  • There are 19 people attending. Please make sure you register for the Geelong conference ASAP.  You need to go to the conference website and find the link to register. "La Vista" has been booked for Friday night dinner.
  • RC of Box Hill Central is organising a fund raiser for Friday 3 March 2017 at the Whitehorse Centre.  It features the Navy Band.  Proceeds will go to Eastern Emergency Relief Network and Rotary projects.  There are still around 100 tickets left.
  • Fund raising idea:  Olive picking on the 1st weekend of June - in Euroa. From this 150 litres of Olive oil would be produced which we can sell - there was interest from a number of people at the meeting
  • The Youth Forum being run by RC of Rowville-Lysterfield is next Tuesday night (28/02) at Waverley Golf Club from 6.30pm.  Cost is $30.00

This weeks speaker was Graeme Chester - Graeme is Chair of the District 9810 Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) committee
  • It is an official Rotary program of Australia and New Zealand - there are 6 ROMAC regions
  • Supporters of ROMAC include Margie Abbott, PDG Bill Boyd, Gavin Fox Smith from Johnson and Johnson
  • ROMAC covers South East Asia, Timor, Vanuatu and Nauru.
  • ROMACs mission is to provide specialist treatment for children from developing countries, in the form of life saving surgery that is not available in their home countries.
  • It is targeted at children 16 and under and has to be dignity restoring and life saving.
  • Since 1988 more than 400 children have been treated.  In 2015/2016 there were 43, 2014/15 - 42, 2013/14 - 39
  • The challenges include communication issues with remote villages, lack of available hospital beds in Australia and insufficient funds
  • ROMAC mainly partner with the Royal Children's Hospital and Monash Medical Centre.
  • The ROMAC waiting list is 30 to 40 children.
  • Each patient must have a sponsor club (Nunawading RC recently sponsored Bradley Bola from PNG).  The Timorese community in particular is very supportive and assists with interpreting and food.
  • There are many contributors to the success of ROMAC  surgeons donate their time as do medical support staff, Rotarians donate time and funding, local communities donate time, food etc, hospitals sometimes don't charge and sometimes free flights are provided.
  • On average it costs $25,000 per ROMAC patient
  • The 9810 District goal is to save 2 patients per year - this is an average donation per club of around $1000

We had a brief visit from Rotarian G.D Mallinath who is president of the Rotary Club of Bangalore Nandini, India.  He brought along his Son in Law, a friend and his Granddaughter who stayed for the meeting.
