In my final message as your club president, I just want to say that it's been an honour. The Nunawading Club continues to be a strong, active club, and we have a number of new and refreshed projects we can be proud of.
I'll say something at changeover, but I did want to take the time here to mention that while everybody in the club contributes to its success, there are some Rotarians who put up their hands over and over again, every month and every year, to do tasks and take on roles for the club. These jobs and the people who do them sometimes go unacknowledged, but I assure you that if they weren't being done it would have a massive impact on all of us. These things aren't being done in search of praise, but the people should be thanked for doing them regardless.
And in a final bit of housekeeping for the year, a couple of reminders:
Changeover bookings MUST be in by the end of day. Final numbers have to be sent to Box Hill RSL early tomorrow. It's going to be a great night, so please don't miss this chance.
The joint board meeting is this Wednesday. If you're on either or both this or next year's board, ensure you're prepared. I'll send an email out separately, but this is our opportunity to handover proposals, project information and information so the club doesn't go into a stall over July and August.
I'll see you Wednesday, when we'll hear from PDG Paul Mee about Australian Rotary Health and then have our extra-big board meeting at the end.
In 1981 the vision of Rotarian Ian Scott, RC Mornington, to research as a District Program into Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), became a National Program for Australian Rotary Health in 1986.
Funding Focus:
1989 -Environmental Health problems of the aged, Research into depression, Alzheimer’s.
1993 - Adolescent Health funding commenced - Lifestyles, impact on school behaviors, Injury Control.
1996 - Family Health -Aboriginal Families, Children of Mothers with severe Mental Illness, Family therapy for patients with cancer, the Quality of life in children with asthma.
1998 - Mental Health -postdoctoral fellowships and PhD scholarships.
Current challenges in Mental Health are in young Australians, where starting earlier means earlier understanding, earlier support and better outcomes. Evidence shows that when young people feel connected to culture, community and identity outcomes improve.
In the last 20 years ARH has invested in the next generation of Indigenous health care and currently support more than 330 Indigenous graduate scholarships. Rural Nursing, Indigenous and Medical Research Scholarships, Post Doctoral Fellowships and PhD research in mental health have led the way in remedying this neglected health area.
Some of the Research Funding Areas
Anxiety Disorder -- Bowel scan Program
Stress -- Pre–Hospital Emergency care
Depression -- Malaria
Bipolar Disorder -- Dementia
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Alzheimer’s -- Primary Children Mental Health
Schizophrenia -- Leukemia

MND was the disease that former AFL player and coach Neale Daniher tirelessly campaignedto raise funds for ongoingresearch to find a cure for this disease. He famously dubbed the disease “the Beast’
[MND is a progressive and currently incurable condition that affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. Over time, these motor neurones degenerate, causing muscles to weaken, waste away, and lose the ability to move, speak, swallow, and eventually breathe. Average life expectancy usually is 27 months, however Neale battled the diseasefor 13 years while dedicating his life to co-founding the FightMND Foundation to raise funds for research and care.]
