If you will remember, The Rotary Foundation is funded in two different ways: The Annual Fund and the Endowment Fund (formerly the Permanent fund).
The Permanent Fund enables individuals to combine their gifts into a significant force to address the world’s greatest needs for generations to come. Donations to the Endowment Fund are made with outright gifts (cash, securities, real estate, tangible personal property or an Endowed Fund), life income agreements, or bequests by a will or trust. Contributions to this fund are invested for the future. Only earnings from their investments are used to support Foundation programs.
WHAT’S YOUR LEGACY? IF YOU WANT TO LEAVE A LASTING LEGACY TO THE WORLD THROUGH THE ROTARY FOUNDATION’S ENDOWMENT FUND - JUST ASK ME HOW AND I‘LL SHOW YOU.
President Phil's Message
The Week That Was
I missed the meeting last week due to a bout of severe allergies that reduced my motivation to that of a flea. Fortunately, nasal sprays and rest have helped me regain some motivation. Thanks Janette for filling in for me.
Thank you to the Bunnings BBQ team for another great effort and an excellent result of $870 raised for our community work. Special thanks to Joe and Mary, the dynamic BBQ duo for backing up after being in NZ the previous weekend to help Peter Koens remove the X-ray Cath Lab at Tauranga. Also thanks to the team that worked at Aurora on Saturday to construct vegetable boxes. Neil did brilliant work to arrange for the entire material costs of around $2,500 to be donated to the Club. I look forward to hearing his full report tonight.
Last Tuesday, I had the pleasure of attending the graduation ceremony of our police mentee Senior Sergeant Megan Dobbs at Melbourne Central Rotary. Judith Eadon has been Megan’s mentor for the past year. The ceremony was attended by the most senior officers in Victoria Police who value the contribution that Rotary has made to the training of their future leaders. Thank you Judith for your commitment to this program.
Len Brear has approached the Club and asked if we can donate lentils to Fareshare to be incorporated into meals that they produce for deserving clients. Many Club members have worked at the Fareshare kitchen and a large number of their meals are distributed within Whitehorse. Fareshare has many of their ingredients donated free of charge and also grow many of the fresh vegetables for their kitchen. However they have to purchase protein to make a balanced meal. The proposal is that we purchase a tonne of lentils at a cost of between $1,000 and $1,500 depending on availability from a wholesaler for use by Fareshare. Given the success of the recent Bunning BBQ and the zero cost Aurora result the club is easily able to fund this initiative. I will ask for your input at Wednesday’s meeting and for a motion to that effect at the Board that night. As a Club we do brilliant work in the community and by supporting Fareshare we are helping them Make a Difference to those who have less options in their life.
Please wear your footy supporter's gear. There are no current Richmond Tiger supporters in the Club but we can take sides.
Our guest speaker will be Paul Molan from the Blackburn Football and Sporting Club and a Board member of the Eastern District League. He will speak on the Blackburn Football Club and developments.
We will be running a few competitions. $5 in for all competitions, being run as follows:
Final Score - The Team and Winning margin
The First Goal Kicker and Team
Norm Smith Medal Winner- Player and Team
We will use the listed teams as at Wednesday and make any necessary adjustments for those affected.
You will have to know the teams so you can make an informed player guess for the Goal kicker and Norm Smith. Start studying the teams.
It will be a fun night. Bring a guest if you wish. Just make sure you register so Ivan can cater accordingly.
Thanks to all who participated in the Aurora planter box project on Saturday. In particular: Hank, as lead builder; Neil, as lead organiser; and Wayne and Joe as lead supervisors. The skills demonstrated by our Club members are formidable.
Design and construction of 6 planter boxes from the preparation of their locations, the cutting , sawing ,and screwing of timber; installing watering systems and finally filling with soil. Not only that but we cleaned up after ourselves! Thanks also to the caterers who provided us with both morning tea and lunch.
Apart from a range of sore muscles and backs only Russell required medical attention for a HUGE splinter! Thanks Dr Bob.
The Bunnings Sausage Sizzle was a resounding success for a Thursday. The weather was kind to us and brought out the customers. We sold a total of 424 sausages and made a net profit of $870 for the day.
Thanks to those who were there - a well oiled if not well greased machine.
Joe & Mary Vanaria, Len Brear, Bee Loew, Lesley Arnolda, Roger Wilson, Max Wittick, Wayne Willoughby, Harvey Lane, Sue & Russell Warmington, Dick Tregear and David Hatcher. Bon Voyage to David who leaves for Europe taking with him a distinct "eau de sausage"

Over the last nine years, over 170 Rotarians have mentored Senior Sergeants in Victoria Police for a 12 month period. The officers have been selected by Police Command as strong performers who have the potential for future leadership roles. Senior Sergeants typically manage suburban police stations. The mentoring program is designed to enhance community engagement and partnership building skills and to provide exposure to alternative leadership approaches.
As mentioned in President Phil's report, the final function of the Victoria Police Leaders Mentoring program was held on 19 September. Certificates were presented to both the Mentors and Mentees at the Rotary Club of Melbourne Central breakfast at the RACV Club Melbourne.
