Last week Eyn Gai ( centre) explained a bit of the history of Sudan and the South Sudan conflict.
He left South Sudan when he was 16 years old and arrived in Canberra in 1998. He has studied law and is presently studying for his Masters.
South Sudan is not a peaceful country. There are two big tribes Dinka and Nuer who are warring. People disappear in the middle of the night. Eyn’s father was a civil engineer who was a peaceful man but he was taken and killed.
Eyn  is a Liaison Officer in Geneva Switzerland working for the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.  There are 1.5 million people displaced and 4.1 million people in need of basic food, health and education.
The aim of the Humanitarian in Geneva is to advocate for ACCESS to humanitarian assistance and protection whilst raising the issue of atrocities committed by the Government of South Sudan and possibilities of prosecution those suspected of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Some people are hell bent on destroying the country. Eyn is determined they won’t!!
He was well supported by a few of his fellow countrymen who are doing amazing work in the Sudanese Community in Victoria.
It was very emotional listening to him and afterwards asking questions of his friends.
Education is the key once again! We truly do live in a great country!

Introducing a guest speaker
  1. Know the speaker's name and how to pronounce it.
  2. Know the speaker's title or position. Do not turn and ask the speaker "Is it Associate or Assistant Professor?"
  3. Be brief. Aim for between 45 seconds and two minutes. Five minutes is too long.
  4. Smile and be enthusiastic in tone, gesture and choice of words.
  5. Know enough about the subject to sound knowledgeable. Do not turn to the speaker and ask if the topic is epidemiology, epistemology or episiotomy.
  6. Announce the speech title as given to you by the speaker. If you have any questions about it, ask the speaker before the introduction. Many speakers select specific titles for a reason or for a pun. If the speaker is not using a title, make sure that your description matches the speaker’s.
  7. Introductions are no place to use slides, overheads or presentation software.
  8. < > are good but should pertain to the subject and be in harmony with the mood of the presentation. Avoid using canned jokes.
If the credentials of the speaker are so outstanding that they must be shared with the audience or if there are publications the audience will want to know about, insert them in the program or prepare a separate commemorative handout.
  9. Never use the old cliché that the speaker needs no introduction. If the introduction ties the speaker to the audience and the topic then each introduction is unique, plus there is always something new about every speaker. There may be audience members who don’t know the guest.
  10. You are the catalyst, not the performer. Do not try to upstage the speaker with your knowledge of the subject. Do not dwell on your relationship with the speaker, even though he or she is your boss, relative or significant other.

    Thanking a guest speaker
  11. Be brief.  Do not repeat the speech.
  12. Again, you are the catalyst, not the performer. Do not try to upstage the speaker with your knowledge of the subject.
  13. If there is a presentation do not say this is a ‘small token of our appreciation’.
Rather ‘We would like you to accept this gift in appreciation of your time spent with us this evening.’
  14. Ask the audience to thank the speaker with acclamation.

Continuing the bird theme......

The chooks next door to me escaped and were scratching in my garden.
My neighbour Sam came out with the chip packet and they came running......

Barbecue action!

The Magic Bank Account

Imagine that you had won the following *PRIZE* in a contest: Each morning your bank would deposit $86,400 in your private account for your use.  However, this prize has rules:

The set of rules:

1. Everything that you didn't spend during each day would be taken away from you.

2. You may not simply transfer money into some other account.

3. You may only spend it.

4. Each morning upon awakening, the bank opens your account with another $86,400 for that day.

5. The bank can end the game without warning; at any time it can say,“Game Over!". It can close the account and you will not receive a new one.

What would you personally do?

You would buy anything and everything you wanted right? Not only for yourself, but for all the people you love and care for. Even for people you don't know, because you couldn't possibly spend it all on yourself, right?

You would try to spend every penny, and use it all, because you knew it would be replenished in the morning, right?

ACTUALLY, This GAME is REAL ...
Shocked ??? YES!

Each of us is already a winner of this *PRIZE*. We just can't seem to see it.

The PRIZE is *TIME*

1. Each morning we awaken to receive 86,400 seconds
As a gift of life.

2. And when we go to sleep at night, any remaining time is Not credited to us.

3. What we haven't used up that day is forever lost.

4. Yesterday is forever gone.

5. Each morning the account is refilled, but the bank can dissolve your account at any time WITHOUT WARNING...

SO, what will YOU do with your 86,400 seconds?

Those seconds are worth so much more than the same amount in dollars.  Think about it and remember to enjoy every second of your life, because time races by so much quicker than you think.

So take care of yourself, be happy, love deeply and enjoy life!

Here's wishing you a wonderful and beautiful day. Start “spending”....

"DON’T COMPLAIN ABOUT GROWING OLD…!"

SOME PEOPLE DON'T GET THE PRIVILEGE!
