  • Bob Hoskins is doing really well!
The speaker was Leon Moore from the RC of Doncaster.  He was accompanied by Greg King who is the President Elect for Doncaster

Leon spoke about LAARFS (Laughing All Abilities Really Friendly Singers). He said the choir has 25 members currently. They have chronic illnesses.  Music uses the whole brain and singing enhances speech.  Singing gives people the ability to focus their energy in one place.  They have a CD in the works.

Below is a write up from the site of the Rotary Club of Manningham
  • The Laughing All Abilities Really Friendly Singers - LAARFS - is for those with a chronic condition, in need of the benefits of camaraderie, fun singing and a purpose. No negativity, no criticism. It just so happens that also produces some pretty good music.

The only requirements are at least one lung and the willingness to have fun. We have no patients - only singers. This may lead to audiences wondering who’s suffering from what. That’s not on, but we do have a common cause under which we unite - I speak of the unheralded condition of Walking Stick Kleptomania.

Someone you know needs us. Paradoxically, those who need us most are those least likely to seek us out - suffering pain, afraid of trying something new by themselves, sick of having to explain themselves all over again. Each one of us was one of those people. We get it.

Leon Moore, founding musical director of the Stroke a Chord choir, and a small group of like minded folks formed the group at the end of 2013. We meet at MC square every Monday afternoon from 1 to 3. It’s a beautiful, warm, well lit room, 2nd floor via lift, with disabled toilet attached, lots of underground parking and a cafe where we go after we sing our hearts out.

C.O.C.C. Lunches for 2016

The C.O.C.C. is back!

Due to popular demand the C.C  award winning lunches are back for their second big year. The Chair, in all humility and with some trepidation has agreed to fulfill the much sought after role.

The lunches will be on
Monday 21st of March
Tuesday 21st of June
Monday  22nd  August
Tuesday 25th October

And then, another trip to the hills, where you need not worry if your car breaks down, Healesville. The location for the March C.C lunch is open for suggestion.
If I don’t receive legitimate advice, I will DECIDE.

Visit to Walter & Eliza Hall Institute - July 2016

Club visit to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute

The visit has been arranged for 28 July commencing at 6pm and lasting about 60-70 minutes after which we will adjourn to a restaurant for dinner.

The Institute has advised as follows:-

“Please let me know if there is a particular area of research that you would like to hear about during the tour. The areas of research at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute include cancer, including breast, lung, ovarian, prostate, colon and blood cancers; immune disorders such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and celiac disease; and infectious diseases such as malaria, hepatitis B and HIV. As part of the tour you can meet with a scientist that researches in your area of interest, hear about their research and tour through their laboratory. The tours usually run for approximately one hour, and also include an overview of the history and other research areas at the institute.”

The institute is located at 1G Royal Parade, Parkville (behind the Royal Melbourne Private Hospital). There is limited car parking on their forecourt, and more parking available in the Royal Melbourne Hospital car park beside the institute.

In April I will seem the members views on what areas they have an interest in being covered during the visit.

Quote of the Week
"Today is an ephemeral ghost...

A strange amazing day that comes only once every four years. For the rest of the time it does not "exist."

In mundane terms, it marks a "leap" in time, when the calendar is adjusted to make up for extra seconds accumulated over the preceding three years due to the rotation of the earth. A day of temporal tune up!

But this day holds another secret—it contains one of those truly rare moments of delightful transience and light uncertainty that only exist on the razor edge of things, along a buzzing plane of quantum probability...

A day of unlocked potential.

Will you or won't you? Should you or shouldn't you?

Use this day to do something daring, extraordinary and unlike yourself. Take a chance and shape a different pattern in your personal cloud of probability!”
