Gabby provided me with this synopsis of her report:

100 Years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand -
Baton Relay on Sunday 11 April 2021:

RC Nunawading have hired horses and a carriage to cover the length of our Baton Relay leg.  We will put Rotary signage on the carriage and this will have visibility as it goes up and down Whitehorse Road and down to the Blackburn Lake precinct.  The carriage can seat up to 8 people and members are encouraged to take part on a rotational basis.

Our leg will commence at 8am from the Whitehorse Civic Centre, Whitehorse Rd – the Farmers Market will be on at this time.  The route will cover Antonio Park, Eastern Emergency Relief Network and Blackburn Lake area including the Yarning Circle.  We have to get the baton back to the Farmers Market by 10.30am to hand over to RC of Mitcham.

When the horses and carriage arrive at Blackburn Lake we propose to offer free rides – the proposal is a route of approximately ¾ kilometre.  We will also offer a barbeque with sausages etc.

We also have 4 projects to roll out over the calendar year:
  • Project in partnership with Kara House, a specialised family violence service – providing 25+ culturally appropriate kitchen packs for distribution to those individuals/families needing assistance – these packs are costed at $70-80 each
  • Project to provide hygiene kits to organisations/schools for distribution to homeless.  These kits will provide the items essential to maintenance of personal hygiene – additionally, 1 pair of underpants are supplied along with razor/shaving cream or sanitary products depending on gender.  The items will be stored in a backpack with Rotary branding on it which can be repurposed.
  • Partnership with the Whitehorse Business Group (WBG).  The Whitehorse Rotary Clubs and Rotaract will fund up to 21 memberships for the WBG at $143 per membership for a calendar year.  The WBG is the largest of its kind in Victoria with around 160 current members.  This project gives Rotary the opportunity to raise its profile within the business community of Whitehorse and may provide a conduit for Corporate membership interest.
  • Mental Health project in partnership with Eastern Health.  Provision of wallet size information products for those at risk of self harm.  The content and how the product will evolve will be determined by a feasibility study to be undertaken by Eastern Health over a 3-4 month period (pending funding)
