First, thanks to all those who represented our club at Mount Pleasant Road Primary School yesterday. Visibility in the community is one of the most important ways -- could it be the most important? -- that we can remind people of the importance of Rotary and the work of our club.
Second, the Youth Achievement Awards nights were a fantastic success. All those who organised it, hosted families and award recipients or helped in any number of ways, thank you. Not all projects have to be complicated, and this is one with such a simple idea -- recognising what normally goes unrecognised -- that can have such an immense impact. It makes them feel good, it makes us feel good and it gives both of us a chance to interact with each other on a really enjoyable night.
Third, still much to do:
This Wednesday we'll hear from Rachel Sietzma, a mindset coach who will speak on how taking on the role of being strong for others can come at a cost, plus we have a Board Meeting to follow.
The same day is the fortnightly Umbrella Dementia cafe at Burwood Brickworks. Get in touch with Sue W for more information.
Next month: so many things
The final Bunnings sausage sizzle for the year
Egg and bacon duty at the Whitehorse Farmers Market
Our end-of year Christmas party on 3rd December
The information and display table days at Forest Hill Chase, a chance to explain and share what we do with the passers-by and provide an invitation to volunteer or join.
Our final regular meeting, when we'll hear from Chelsea Deacon, representing our YAA sponsor, Bendigo Community Bank Whitehorse -- and also have our AGM.
Then we can take a break.
But don't forget that we'll be ringing the Yew Year in on January 14th, literally and figuratively, and that the President's BBQ is on 24th January -- expect an email soon.
Year 6 students from Parkmore Primary School, Rangeview Primary School, Vermont Primary School, Vermont South Special School, Weeden Heights Primary School and Whitehorse Primary School were presented with Youth Achievement Awards.
These worthy recipients were nominated by their school. All awardees received a Citation and a Certificate from District Governor Nominee, Murray Wilson. Additionally, Chelse Deacon (Community Engagement Advisor- Bendigo Bank, Blackburn South) presented them with a “goody bag”.
Ian is raising funds and awareness this Movember for all the dads, brothers, sons and mates in our lives. He needs your help. Please donate to support men's health.
The Dementia Cafe is on this Wednesday, and we are looking for afternoon tea donations, either store bought or homemade, something bite-sized. If you are able to provide some afternoon tea, you can either drop it off on Wednesday morning at Shia's house before 10:00am where Sue will collect it and take it for you. Or you can contact Sue directly to arrange collection with her.
The Umbrella Dementia Cafe is scheduled for every 2nd and 4th Wednesday from 1:30 - 3:30 pm at the Hollows, Level 1, Burwood Brickworks Shopping Centre, 70 Middleborough Road, BURWOOD EAST.
Our Club's contribution is to provide a lovely afternoon tea, often based on a theme (see below). Contributions from you all will make it extra special. If you're able donate anything — baked goods, sandwiches, or other treats — that would be fantastic.
Please contact Sue W. if you are able to assist. The more members that are involved, the better.
November • 26th – Preparing for Christmas December • 10th – End of Year Christmas Party
The Club cooked sausages at the Mount Pleasant Road Primary School Fair last Saturday. Nick McGowan MP provided sausages, onions, bread, condiments, serviettes, gloves etc.
It was a fun-filled day with food trucks, carnival games, petting zoo, face painting, raffles, student performances.
Shia & Coral in support front of house, with Ian cooking to perfection...well that's what he told us!
I had a message from Alison Vickers last night to say that her father John Vickers passed away on Saturday 22nd November.
He was a well-loved past Rotary Club of Nunawading member who even after he left walked around the Farmers' Market with me to collect the stall holders' money for a number of years. John was recognised as a Paul Harris Fellow in 1995 and again in 2008.
We send our deepest sympathies to Alison and Andrew and his family.
