Unfortunately, the slippery, drenched conditions on Saturday morning meant that loading the 40-foot container with playgrounds for Sri Lanka had to be postponed. Workplace health and safety considerations are important, and we'd rather not risk the health and wellbeing of our club members and other volunteers needlessly. Please keep your ear to the ground for an announcement about the new scheduled date and make yourself available as labour or support if you can.
Thankfully for our farmers market volunteers the weather has been somewhat less persistently aggressive on Sunday, so hopefully both the entrance greeters and croissants have stayed reasonably dry.
Those who attended last Wednesday's meeting got to learn a lot about the role of Victoria's Governor and the outreach work done by Deborah Nicolson, our speaker, at Government House. Get along for a tour if you can; both the architecture and the gardens are worth seeing.
As mentioned, we have an opportunity to promote some of our own projects and the projects of our fellow clubs on 3WBC, thanks to the work of Ken and others. Get your pitches and spruiking voices ready and get in touch.
For the next two meetings, we'll have the Youth Achievement Awards. Recognising the efforts and endeavours of students in local primary schools that aren't part of the standard sporting and academic successes is a great way to promote what Rotary is all about -- seeing how we can help others and stepping up to provide that service. Meeting the families and teachers is always a treat.
Look elsewhere in the Bulletin for more details about all the events remaining as we wind down toward the new year.
Deborah Nicolson - 'Community Engagement Adviser' at Government House, took us through the planning, building, history and significance of this iconic mansion house in Melbourne. Built between 1872 - and 1876, it is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and is recognised for having historical, architectural and aesthetic significance to the State. According to the Register, "It is one of the largest and most beautiful mansion houses in Australia and is considered to be one of the finest examples of 19th - century residential architecture".
Deborah brought to life the people and events of the past, with the reminder, that some 30 Governors later, our Current Governor is Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC.
There were many questions following Deborah's presentation, with some members suggesting a group tour. I can vouch for the tour, having experienced it earlier this year and thoroughly recommend it, and... it's free! If any members are interested, please make contact on 0408 378 138 or by email.
The Dementia Cafe is on this Wednesday and we are looking for afternoon tea donations, either store bought or homemade, something bite sized. If you are able to provide some afternoon tea, you can either drop it off on Wednesday morning at Shia's house before 10:00am where Silvana will collect it and take it for you. Or you can contact Silvana directly to arrange collection with her.
Thanks for your contribution, it is very much appreciated. From the Community Service Committee.
The Umbrella Dementia Cafe is scheduled for every 2nd and 4th Wednesday from 1:30 - 3:30 pm at the Hollows, Level 1, Burwood Brickworks Shopping Centre, 70 Middleborough Road, BURWOOD EAST.
Our Club's contribution is to provide a lovely afternoon tea, often based on a theme (see below). Contributions from you all will make it extra special. If you're able donate anything — baked goods, sandwiches, or other treats — that would be fantastic.
Please contact Silvana if you are able to assist. The more members that are involved, the better.
