HOW THE ROTARY FOUNDATION TOUCHED ONE PERSON’S LIFE:

“What we do is touch other people . . . open the horizon to them . . . say ‘You matter.’ You see, the five men who chose me to become a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar are gone . . . but they’re not. They never will be. Because along the way, I will in my own way share with others - and have - what those five men and the 60 members of the Marshall (Texas) Rotary and the tens of thousands of other members of Rotary did in 1956 when they said, ‘Bill Moyers, you can matter.’”

Bill Moyers, TV journalist and commentator, and former Deputy Director of the Peace Corps.

President Phil's Message

“What does the Rotary Club of Nunawading do?”

I have struggled to answer this question as long as I have been a member of the Rotary Club of Nunawading. If I cannot define what the club does, then how can I explain our role in the community to others? We need to answer this question before we choose projects for the coming trimester.

So I propose the following statement;

“We support youth within Whitehorse and International health projects”

Deconstructing this statement you can see how this fits our Club;

We support youth within Whitehorse
  • Aurora school
  • Blackburn High interviews / careers nights
  • Whitehill scholarships for students to complete secondary school.
  • Model United Nations Assembly
  • Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
  • National Youth Science Forum
  • Student Exchange
  • Dad’s group supports children by improving the mental health of fathers
We support International health projects
  • Medical Imaging Machines
  • Interplast
  • Polio eradication through Polio Plus
  • Development of a malaria vaccine
  • Australian Rotary Health
  • Trachoma Project (also a youth initiative)
This Rotary year there are only two items in our budget that do not directly align with this mission.
  • Foundation donations that go to a wide range of programs.
  • The President’s personal Project that is directed to the children of struggling families in Gippsland.
All organisations have goals that do not align with their mission. This may be for historical, legislative or other reasons. As long as 80-90% of the goals align with the mission then that is OK.

Funding is also very simple.
  • Support for youth within Whitehorse – funded from the Whitehorse Farmers' Market and Bunnings BBQ’s.
  • Support for International health projects – funded by other fund raising activities.
The programs that are adopted by the President and Board in a particular year can be tailored to meet the changing resources and direction of the Club and still follow the mission.

So this is the model that I wish the Club to consider, comment on and hopefully accept at the AGM for the three years ahead. If we gain approval then Janette, Gabby and I can work up a three-year plan for presentation early in 2018.

Guest Speaker - Uniting Vic & Tas
Jenny Holdem is a Volunteer Coordinator for Uniting Vic Tas. Uniting is the community services arm of the Uniting Church in Victoria and Tasmania. It has been supporting Australians for over 100 years. They are 7000 skilled, passionate and creative people providing over 770 programs and services. There were 21 UnitingCare agencies, Wesley Mission Victoria, Share and UnitingCare Victoria and Tasmania Early Childhood Services, which came together to become Uniting.

Jenny has been working in Aged Care and managing volunteers for 30 years. There has been significant changes in the Federal Government's aged care sector. Clients have access to a fixed amount of funding and can apply to a number of service providers for the services that best meets their needs.

Because the sector is very competitive, organisations such as Uniting rely heavily on volunteers. However the supply of volunteers is limited because people are retiring much later in their working life. As well as providing social support through traditional means such as by phone or personal visiting, Uniting also helps facilitate social interaction between clients that is self-sustaining and can involve a large group of clients.

You can find out more about Uniting here.
Bunnings Sausage Sizzle - December 21
Our last Sausage Sizzle for the year is Thursday December 21st.

Unfortunately, Joe and Mary will be away and being Christmas, I thought I would get in early to make sure we have enough volunteers. The times are 07:30 - 1000, 10:00 - 1200, 1200 -14:00, 14:00 -16:00 (approx.). Please let me know your availability

This is likely to be a bumper day being so close to Christmas
