At Nadi airport in Fiji, just off the covered walkway past the sugar cane railway track towards the Queens Road bus stop, there is a very large strangler fig (rubber) tree.
Under this tree, tourists and locals can enjoy inexpensive local delicacies at any of the small food outlets.
On my return journey from Suva to Melbourne last Tuesday, I had some time to spare at Nadi Airport. Rob Buchanan, the founder of New Zealand charity “Mobility Equipment for the Needs of the Disabled” (Mend), arrange to meet under the tree for a cup of coffee.
Rob and the Rotary Clubs of Nadi and Suva are in the process of establishing a facility to produce prosthetic limbs in Fiji.
The morning before our meeting Rob and Seva Tuks , an audiologist who services 17 special schools in Fiji, visited the Nadi Centre for Special Education to test students hearing and dispense hearing aids as required.
