Presidential Ponderings

Hello everyone

Hope you had a good week so far.

Thank you to everyone who attended last Wednesday night for the Membership survey outcomes and gave further ideas about how you think the club should look moving forward.

Harvey’s screen show and notes taken at the meeting by Rob J will be circulated to all members in the next few days.

We received news that very sadly, Anthony Aulsebrook Past President from the Rotary Club of Baywater, has passed away after a year long illness.

Cluster Presidents meeting and 2021 Rotary birthday celebrations – Thursday 13 February 2020

The  Cluster Presidents meeting will be held this Thursday along with discussion about the 100th Birthday celebrations in 2021.  The President Elects will also attend.

If you have any ideas for the Birthday celebrations or anything you want brought up at the Presidents meeting please let me know.

2020 District Conference – Echuca/Moama – 20 to 22 March

If you are attending, please make sure you have booked for conference.

Friday night’s dinner venue is being arranged.  The theme for the Gala Dinner on Saturday night is “Masquerade”.

Do you have any stories??

A Book, History of Rotary in Australia 1921-2021 is being written, and they are asking for articles from Districts covering the last 25 years in Rotary.  If you have a story you would like to tell, please email details and pictures to Judith Eadon (District Secretary) so that they can be passed on, by Friday 1st April.

Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds Project – in partnership with the Rotary Club of Flemington Kensington

This is an update on the project.  Janette started the ball rolling earlier last year after the Multi District Conference where we first found out about the project.

Ben Stennett has spent a lot of time with the City of Whitehorse to get the project approved and supported by council so I thank Ben for his efforts.  This process had to occur before we could move forward.

We now have 3 playgrounds within the City of Whitehorse that are due to be removed and are suitable for recycling/reinstallation overseas in Countries such as Sri Lanka and Fiji.   Not all playgrounds can be recycled – if they are wooden or cannot be easily reassembled overseas, then we can’t use them.

Our role is to firstly take photos of the playground and send them to stakeholders.  The photos are coded.  We use these codes to mark all the playground parts so it can be reassembled correctly overseas.  We do not disassemble the playgrounds. The City of Whitehorse use contractors to do this.  We then need to transport the parts to Donations In Kind for storage and final transportation.

Rotary Club of Box Hill will now be known as RC Box Hill Burwood.  They have officially changed their name with Rotary International.

A visit from a former Rotary Youth Exchange Student
Grace Reiter, a Former Rotary Youth Exchange student spoke at the club recently about her exchange to Germany back in 2015. Grace spoke about her experience of a lifetime at the age of 16 living in the small town of Telgte, Germany, located just outside the city of Münster (In the North West of Germany). In her time, she stayed with four host families, attended school and travelled all around Europe, even studying Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre, London. Grace also talked about what it meant to come home after exchange and going back to school. She talked about what she has done in the almost 5 years since her return, graduating a scholar of distinction, attending University, part-time jobs and where she hopes to see herself in the future. In all this she spoke about how her exchange made all her achievements possible, how she had to learn how to be confident, adaptive, independent and responsible and all the ways she has used these skills. She also spoke about the friends from her exchange who have come to Australia to visit and even stay with her and her family.
An update about Fundraising from Russell
RAFFLE

Please remember to continue selling the raffle tickets. So far we have received back over 25 books that have been sold giving us over $500.
New Gen has decided to take 10 books and sell them. Great to see us working together.
At $2.00 a ticket with two cars as prizes they are easy to sell. Just ask your friends and relatives.
If you are having any trouble selling the tickets contact Russell Warmington to get ideas on the best method.
As you sell a book please bring it back with the money and give to Russell.

BUNNINGS SAUSAGE SIZZLE DAYS

Thanks to Russell, Dick Tregear, James Tan, Harvey, Les, Neil, Wendy, Sue W, Bev Hoskins, Bob3, and Di, who all helped at the sizzle on October 17th. Even though it was not a great day weather wise, we made a profit of $605.00. A great effort.
As our club does an excellent job in supporting Bunnings, they occasionally give us extra days. This Saturday 2nd November, they have asked to full if for them as another group has pulled out. Thanks to all those who have offered help during my phone around. It should be a great day.

Dates for future Bunnings Sausage Sizzles

Saturday 2nd November
Thursday 21st November
Thursday 19th December
Thursday 15th January 2020
Monday 27th January 2020
Then every third Thursday of the month

Our November 21st Sausage Sizzle will be dedicated to helping the farmers through a campaign by the  Rotary Clubs of Australia. This is an Australian wide campaign with all Rotary Clubs participating.
As you can see we will need some extra help the weekend before Christmas. A fantastic opportunity for the club to raise extra funds for our projects.  The weekend before Christmas is traditionally a huge weekend at Bunnings so we will need as many helpers as possible.
Please keep these dates with in mind with your other activities, so we are able to continue to take advantage of the support Bunnings gives to the Rotary Club of Nunawading.

District Seminar - The Rotary Foundation - Friday 8th November

District Seminar - The Rotary Foundation - Friday 8th November

This year’s Foundation Seminar is scheduled for the evening of Friday 8th November.  Time and venue details will follow shortly, but please note the date in your calendar now.

The purpose of this seminar is to promote awareness and support of the Foundation – our charity of choice – and to share learnings from some of the projects and programs funded through the Foundation.  In prior years we have covered matters such as:

  • Keynote addresses from Foundation beneficiaries and advocates.
  • Case studies of exemplary projects.
  • Updates on how our District’s allocation of grants has been spent.
  • Details on how Rotary clubs and members can support the Foundation financially.
  • Updates on Polio eradication.
  • Presentations on projects under development, looking for funding partners.

In preparation for this year’s seminar, we have several requests and suggestions:

  1. What would you like to hear about at this year’s seminar?
  2. Do you have a project under development for which you’d like a funding partner, and would you like to speak briefly about it at this year’s seminar?
  3. If you have some relatively new members in your Club, you may want to suggest that they take a look at the Foundation learning module in the Rotary Online Learning Centre.  Rotary International have been building a number of very helpful online learning tools.  Just log in to your MyRotary account, locate the learning centre: https://learn.rotary.org/members/learn/catalog and select the “Enrol” option to register.  Then look for the following module: Rotary Foundation Basics.
  4. Would you like a presentation on the Foundation at your Club?  If so, we can provide a speaker and tailor a session specifically for your needs.

Please reply on the questions above by close of business Friday 11th October.  A follow up on registrations for the seminar will occur shortly thereafter.
