Aquaboxes for Vanuatu
Posted by John Lynch
At the March Board meeting it was approved that the Club donates $ 450 for the purchase of an AQUABOX to be sent to Vanuatu after the recent devastating cyclone. Here is some background on the Aquabox Project.
Aquabox (www.aquabox.com.au) is essentially a lifesaving water tank with water filters and water treatment tablets that can convert up to 2,000 litres of polluted water, making it safe and pleasant to drink. The boxes are also filled with emergency aid to reduce the suffering during the aftermath of a disaster. This local initiative is powered by the members of the Rotary Club of Eltham (District 9790).120 Aquaboxes have been dispatched for Vanuatu from Melbourne. Clean water is drastically needed in the disaster area and the Aquabox water purification units have the capability to convert over 550,000 litres of dirty water into clean drinking water for the victims of Cyclone PAM. Working with Rotary NZ World Community Service and Red Cross in Vanuatu the Aquaboxes will be distributed to individual families in need as well larger village communities, schools and clinics. The additional aid in the Aquaboxes will also provide some shelter, food utensils and basic tools to help in recovery.
Although communication and transportation is still difficult in Vanuatu we will be continuing to work in partnership with Rotary NZ and Red Cross to meet the needs of the cyclone victims.
