KLIBUR DOMIN
Our Speaker - Air Commodore Peter Newton, AO RAAF (Retd) needed no introduction. A resident of Blackburn, he has long been acquainted with several of our members and has spoken to us about Ryder- Cheshire Australia and the work they carried out in Australia, India and Timor Leste.
On this occasion, Peter spoke of Klibur Domin in Tibar, Timor Leste - a health care facility he had been instrumental in establishing in 2000.
Background: 400 years of colonisation, exploitation, depletion of resources, war, famine and disease have left Timor Leste seriously under resourced and devoid of adequate infrastructure to meet even the most basic needs of its population. TB and Malnutrition are just two of the major health challenges faced by the populace.
Klibur Domin means Sharing With Love in Tetum The facility is situated in Tibar – some 17 km west of Dili. Its goal :
‘To relieve the suffering of Timorese people
who are sick, disabled or destitute,
without discrimination.’
All care and services are provided free of charge.
The property- once an aged care home established by Indonesia - had, (post referendum) been left in a state of disrepair . With the help of Rotary Volunteers the property was restored - making it suitable for housing patients .
The first patients were admitted in 2001.
In 2004, the management of Klibur Domin was handed over to the Timorese, with RCA continuing to support the facility.
It provides
- Inpatients Program - providing care for low needs patients
- Community Based Rehabilitation program - supporting children and adults with disability and providing respite care and access to education
- Tuberculosis (TB) Program, which provides care for patients with both TB and Multi-Drug Resistant TB.
- Respite Centre providing intensive therapy, good nutrition and rest - especially to children who are disabled or severely malnourished.
- A recently established vegetable garden helps the centre become more self-sustainable.
