Last week a number of members paid a vocational visit to the Australian Synchrotron in Clayton to learn about his world class facility, how it works and what it is used for. I was a fascinating visit.
The Synchroton accelerates electrons to produce powerful beams of light (a million times brighter than the sun)to examine the atomic and molecular details of a wide range of material. It is used both by universities and research centres and by businesses.
It is used for:
Medical research into new drugs and new methods to treat cancer and other diseases.
Forensic investigation of artworks without damaging the works
Improving our environment through study of new kinds of materials
The list of possible uses for Synchrotron light is endless
