WHAT DOES THE ROTARY FOUNDATION DO WITH ITS MONEY?
The Rotary Foundation spends charitable contributions on multiple programs and grants. From the eradication of POLIO to scholarships, vocational training teams, Rotary Peace Centers, Humanitarian projects. The funds are used for programs and projects Rotarians feel passionate about. If you want detailed financial information you should check on-line at www.rotary.org and you can see how much was spent on each program as well as operating costs.
I can tell you that our Foundation is ranked as one of the best. With 1.2 million Rotarians over-seeing the funds at a grassroots level I have all the confidence in the world that are funds through Rotary are in amazing hands doing amazing work here and abroad.
THE ROTARY FOUNDATION SPENDS ITS MONEY IN OUR NAME TO DO GOOD WORK!

President Phil's Message

The III年 plan

A number of members have queried my choice of graphic for the three year plan. I chose the Roman numeral III due to the longevity of Roman buildings and roads. None of these assets survived thousands of years without meticulous planning and execution. The Chinese symbol 年 means “year” and symbolizes a culture that built the Great Wall and has flourished over many millennia. If you have been to China lately you would have seen the infrastructure that is transforming the China of today.  Both civilizations planned and built for the future. This is what our Club needs to do in order to flourish.

Last Wednesday we made a great start on defining what project or direction the Club will take in Whitehorse over the next three years. There are many ongoing projects such as Polio Plus and Medical Imaging Machines that require support. We are concentrating on the question:
What project can we take on that will be highly visible in the Whitehorse community and will inspire our club members?

John has included the detailed submissions in this Bulletin and you should read them and form your own opinions on their merit.I would like to thank the following members for their contributions on the night.
Bob Hoskins – Bob felt that we had good projects but we were not seen by the public. He favoured a visible event such as a fun run, Art show or Vintage car rally to raise our community profile. Read more here.
Hank Gibcus – Hank was keen to build a new shed at Aurora with our funds (and some interesting arithmetic) and community support. We have certainly built a good relationship with Aurora over the years and this relationship should be used.
Bob Davis – Bob was keen to run a Debutant Ball for intellectually disabled with the help of Sue and Rob Cross. This would involve many parents and families of the debs and potentially bring in members.
Kevin Thomas – Kevin looked at this challenge in a different way. He felt that a focus on YOUTH could then lead to a series of projects at Aurora, EER, Blackburn High and other groups all with a common aim. The aim would be to develop youth across the city. If this approach was taken then all the other contributions above could be a part of this Youth focus.
Len Brear made a submission, which is attached, and I will let Len speak to the Club on a later date.
Ian Symons also suggested that he had some ideas. Ben Stennett will look at what information is available from the Council.

Thanks again everyone for your tremendous support and input so far.

2017 Deakin Community Awards

Our own Michael Sukkar MHR presented a Deakin Community Award to Ian Armstrong in recognition of his tireless work with Eastern Emergency Relief Network (EERN)

The Deakin Community Awards is an initiative that recognises the unsung community leaders and volunteers of the Deakin electorate who generously give their time and energy to make our local community a better place to live without expecting reward or recognition.
Whitehorse Spring Festival
Thank you to the Nunawading members that participated in the Spring Festival yesterday! The weather, combined with the myriad of activities provided, brought a lot of people out to play!

The marquee, which was on a corner site, was attractively decorated with blue and yellow bunting with matching blue tablecloths. We were provided with two tables and four chairs.
We had banners advertising End Slavery, Operation Cleft, the Toilet Project, Eastern Emergency Relief, Rotaract, the Indigenous Project and Rotarians Against Malaria.  We also got out the tear drop banners from the Farmers’ Market store room.

We passed out 150 Australian Rotary Health bags in two hours filled with membership brochures and Beyond Blue material. We also had information on International Women’s Day Breakfast the Medical Imaging project , the Farmers’ Market bookmarks and Polio Plus! We spoke to many people and got a few names and addresses.  The crowd looked like it was the expected 20,000! Rotaract members were there all day alongside the Rotarians. All in all we had a marvellous presence at Whitehorse Spring Festival!

A fabulous team effort!
